A beautiful day in Chicagoland!

In my few remaining days in the Midwest, I am making a point of enjoying the truly transcendant days like today. Yesterday was rainy and 45 degrees; today was sunny and 75 degrees. God is wonderful to grant us days like today, and He also likes to teach us the importance of seizing upon these moments by making them so random and scarce. Just walking around the block I was able to observe myriad species of God's awe inspiring creation basking in His goodness. I was struck by how nature itself offers praise to God on days such as this. The bird's songs had returned, where for the past several days they were absent. The squirrels were free to frolic and play instead of hunker down in shelter from the wet and cold. Butterflies flittered on the calming breeze, while flowers bloomed showing their magnificent colors.

Then I stopped to ponder all these things. The flowers would wither and die if there were only sunny days. The blistering heat of an unabated sun would scorch their delicate petals and rob them of their brilliant hues, leaving them desolate and colorless. The rain provides the life-giving flow of water they require for their glory to unfold. The cloudy days give a respite from the brightness and a cool time of renewal. The animal kingdom too, would suffer. No living creature is exempt from needing the water that the rain brings. And the clouds provide a mask for the sun to just peek out from behind, not revealing his full warmth and life-giving power; but only hinting at its magnificence when his rays stream out from behind those gray captors and show us what hope is. What life is.
